Just because it's a website, it doesn't mean that the usual conventional rules of politeness doesn't apply.
If someone said 'Good morning' to you in real life, you wouldn't just ignore them, would you?
This is why women's inboxes became flooded with too many messages for them to easily handle, because many of the follow up messages are just asking why you haven't replied to them yet.
Now, use some empathy and put yourself in the shoes of the poor men here. They see that you've read their message and are hopefully remaining online waiting for your reply, whether it's a rejection or not, even though they probably have much better things to do, because they don't want to miss your reply and a chance to begin a dialogue with you.
(And some women do get angry if they don't get an immediate reply to their reply.)
Meanwhile, you may be exchanging messages with just one person, whilst a dozen others are desperately hanging on here for a reply.
After a while, the men realise that you will be continuously getting messages from about 30 people a day (50 at weekends) and that eventually you will only have the time or enthusiasm to respond to the most recent messages, so they'll keep on messaging you so that theirs will be the most recent messages.
(It also doesn't help that this site can show you as being online up to an hour or more after you've actually logged out.
So stop being selfish, and think about other people for a change. It only takes a second to message back 'Sorry, no, but good luck finding someone on here'. You can cut-and-paste that message for convenience.
If you really can't deal with the amount of messages that you get here when you're online, then set aside one day of the week to be on here in the early morning or very late at night when there are very few people to see you online, so no one will message you and you can deal with replying to people. Everyone would prefer a polite reply several days late to no reply at all.
